People of Color Space Estación Libre represents an autonomous space, where People of Color can explore parallels and make connections across racial and ethnic lines. Delegations have included people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Native American, Central American, Middle Eastern and Mexican descent. In this space, we are not asked to muffle feelings of rage, disguise sorrow, or censor our opinions. The time to heal, reflect and plan is not considered optional—it is the foundation of our movement forward. The unity expressed in our coming together to analyze the effects of structural oppression, domination, and exploitation, empowers us personally and collectively. Power lies in the continuous flow of interaction. In sharing our diverse experiences as People of Color, we discover the commonness of our struggle. Estación Libre is a supportive political community for People of Color, based on a collective commitment towards true democracy, liberty, and justice. Orange House Estacion Libre maintains a permanent living and work space in San Cristobal de las Casas for use by activists from communities of color from the US and Canada. People have stayed for weeks or months to study, contribute to the work of Estacion Libre, and work on specific projects in communities. This space allows us to grow in personal and collective ways, finding our strengths and contributing them, while learning from an inspirational model alternative ways of organizing back in our communities. The collective space represents to us a microcosm of our vision towards creating a free, egalitarian, cooperative, democratic, and peaceful society. |
